Wolfgang Berthold

Manufacture and facility strategy

Dr Berthold is founder and president of bbphc GmbH, a CMC biotech consulting company. Until his retirement from BiogenIdec in 2011, he was the Chief Technology Officer and SVP Technical Development. As a member of the Board of BiogenIdec International GmbH located in Zug, Switzerland, he pursued strategic international interests for Partnering especially in AsiaPacific.  He joined BiogenIdec in 2000 in San Diego as Head of Bio-Pharmaceutical Manufacturing.

Before that move, Wolf spent 5 years at Roche in New Jersey heading the Biotechnology Manufacturing and Development. And 16 years (1979-1995) at Boehringer-Ingelheim, Germany, where in 1984, in a joint venture of BI with Genentech, he was a major driver for the establishment of biopharmaceutical development and the construction of the first European ‘6 pack’ Biotech plant, including the establishment of the entire scope for GMP required for the making of biotech protein drugs.
Dr. Berthold received his PhD in biochemistry 1975 from the University of London, UK, after undergraduate studies in medicine and biochemistry in Germany. Further details of his experience and current activities in the Biotech CMC arena can be found at www.bbphc.com.
